"She's got normal hearing in one ear which ought to be enough"
Have you ever felt like making this remark?
If you have you ever been irritated into making this sort of remark about someone with hearing loss, it would probably help to understand why it is unfair.
Why the problem
As explained on the page about background noise and directional problems no-one with hearing in just one ear can pinpoint the exact position of a source of sound. This means that everyday sounds and conversations interfere with each other when they are occurring together.
The way forward
The first thing to do to attack the problem is to get medical attention to see what can be done to raise the hearing on the weaker ear. After that the only way forward is acceptance and taking care to adopt other ways to be supportive to someone with hearing loss.
There is really no way that hearing in just one ear can ever be enough for true normal hearing.
More common irritations with hearing-impaired people and what to do about them
She says "Speak up" and then, when I do, she says "No need to shout!"
He can always hear when he wants to. He just doesn't concentrate
She doesn't properly adjust, use, or persist with her hearing aid
She could always learn lip-reading!
He's got normal hearing in one ear which ought to be enough
He doesn't really count any more because he's so deaf
